(Thurso - One of the most famous location
for fossil fishing) - 2003
When you visit any location
for the first time, normally it takes a long
time to settle down before you start to find
any trace of life at all, then gradually you
start to make better finds. Thurso starts
almost instantaneous with fish fragments in
most of the rocks, scales can be seen everywhere,
sometimes rocks full of scales can be split
for other fragments. The most common type
of fish here is an armored fish and its shield
is quite common. As you walk Eastwards, the
fragments seem to get bigger. Whole complete
fish have been found here and further up the
cliff they can be found in nodules but due
to their value, are very scarce.

(Collecting at Thurso) - 2003
The best advice is to firstly
search in the small bay areas where rocks
have been washed up, these smaller boulders
are easier to manage and split than trying
to attack the foreshore only to find that
your hammer blunts. Fish can be found on the
shoreshore and it is worth a search, but look
for cracks, edges and loose rocks otherwise
you could have quite a task on your hands.
If there are few smaller rocks around, use
a large lump hammer to split up large boulders
and split them down, look for rocks that already
have fish fragments showing. Some rocks contain
a tinted blue coloured fish and others are
black, these are two different species of
fish.
