Thurso
Introduction and Info

Location Information (key)
(Recommended)
Foreshore, Cliff

(The Devonian Rocks of Thurso) - 2003

LOCATION

Head towards Thurso from the A9, as you enter the town from the South, you need to keep to the East hand side of the River, so do not cross the bridge, instead turn off ahead at the A836 towards East Thurso and the ruined castle. The road runs straight and you will see a small road turn off at the end of the straight part ahead. Take this and follow it all the way around, past the castle, you will see a large farm, from here the road changes to a wide track road, you can drive straight through and onto a large car park area. Park here and walk onto the beach eastwards, its not far before you will start to see fish fragments in many of the rocks.

(The Thurso foreshore can be quite slippery) - 2003

EQUIPMENT

TOOLS
: The Devonian Rocks are extremely hard and you will need a good splitting hammer or wide chisel and hammer, the fish can also be very fragile and can easily shatter, so it is best to take home as much as the rock as you can, treat the fish and then size it down. Fossils should be wrapped well and placed into bags. Take care to avoid vibrations as much as you can as the fish peace's will shatter.

(Watch out for Hundreds of Strange Pink Jelly Fish!!) - 2003

SAFETY

Common sense when collecting at all locations should be taken and knowledge of tide times should always be noted. The coastline at Thurso is very dangerous since the tide always hits the cliff and comes in very fast. Always return before the turn of the tide. The surface can be very slippery so care must be taken when walking over the seaweeded and algae areas.
