LOCATION
The A39 leads directly to Lynmouth and from here, you will see the cable rail that offer a lift up the tall hill. Just below this is access to the beach and from here the Lynton beds can be clearly seen in the distance (as seen in the photo above, taken whilst moving up the cable rail. |
The Lynton beds are from the Lower Devonian of the late Emsian-Eifeclian age. These are characterised by finegrained, laminated sandstones and mudstones with thin shell beds. Fauna and Bivalves can both be found including Modiomorpha sp., Limoptera sp., Pterinea sp., Actinodesma sp. and fossils of Platyorthis circularis, Spirifer subcuspidatus along with a range of bryozoans and Pteraspids. The trace fossil, Chondrites can also be found.

EQUIPMENT
A hammer and chisel. are ideal along with some suitable containers. The fossils are quite hard but can be brittle so they should be wrapped well. |

SAFETY
Common sense when collecting at all locations should be taken and knowledge of tide times should always be noted. The tide can easily cut you off at Lynmouth. Be careful of falling rocks from the high cliffs. |
