LOCATION

Dunwich beach is easily signposted and can be found without any difficulty in Dunwich itself. You can park on the large car park for free where there are toilets, a cafe, shop and restaurant.

(Dunwich, the sea rarely hits the cliff these days) - 2003

Dunwich once a large city has experienced rapid erosion for many years, however during the last 15, this erosion has slowed right down and cliff falls are now quite rear. The reason is a large shingle bank which has formed along the Dunwich beach. However, you will find nothing in these cliffs, bones have been found when the beach is scoured out or washed up from the sea bed. Many have found a bones lying around the beach during winter storms, though these are quite rare. Like Covehithe, the bone bed is beneath the beach level. The only real chance of finding fossils is for the sea to once again clear away the shingle bank and wash new sections out, scouring deep into the bone bed.

EQUIPMENT

All you need is a good eye for collecting, bones are washed up from the sea bed and no tools are required, bones from Dunwich tend to be quite hard and so if any are found, the can be simply placed into a bag or wrapped and carried back.

SAFETY & DANGERS

Common sense when collecting at all locations should be taken. DO NOT climb the cliff, you will find nothing in these beds as they are unfossilierious. Always take note of tide times.
