LOCATION
South Ferriby Quarry can be accessed just off the Humber bridge, if travelling from the South, it is directly before the bridge and you can actually see it whilst going over the Humber bridge. |
The Quarry at South Ferriby is extremely interesting. It splits into Upper Jurassic and Cretaceous. Five sections include Turonian, Black Band Member, Cenomanian, Albian Red Chalk and the Aptian.
The Red Chalk (Albian) contains fossils such as bivalves, brachiopods and Belemnites. It is 2m thick at this location. Under this lays a thin layer of Carstone (Middle Cretaceous), with some Kimmeridge Clay (Upper Jurassic) below this.
The chalk from the Ferriby formation is lower and can reveal Holasters, Ammonites and Bivalves. Though these are less common than alternative locations of the Ferriby formation.
EQUIPMENT
TOOLS: A Hammer and chisel for the chalk and a knife, or pick for softer material. Suitable footwear should also be worn. Fossils are very fragile here and should be placed carefully into containers. |

SAFETY
Common sense when collecting at all locations should be taken. Please ensure you follow the national safety guide when visiting quarries and pits, ensure you wear hard hats, suitable footwear and florescent jackets. Stay away from wet and water logged areas of the quarry, for you could end up being stuck in mud. |
