Abbey Wood
Introduction and Info

Location Information (key)
(Ideal for Children)
Quarry
PERMISSION REQUIRED

(Sieving for fossils) - 2000

LOCATION

The location of the site is near the abbey ruins, you can park on the road side along Abbey Road, just next to the woods and ruins, and walk through the woods opening. Please use the map on the summary box for information where to find Abbey Woods.

Abbey Wood is the most fossiliferous location in London, although it is possible for anyone visiting the area to pick up a few finds (probably sharks teeth), it is mostly done through organised parties such as the TRG. The TRG has annual trips to abbey wood, hiring shutters and digging into the shell bed. Everybody has to follow certain guidelines involving mesh size and finds. This is a major place of importance and therefore all major finds are required to be handed into the museum. A tanker of water for wet sieving is provided onsite. The most common find is sharks teeth, where hundreds can be found in one trip.

EQUIPMENT

To visit Abbey Wood, assuming that you are going with an organised group, you will need a 0.5mm mesh sieve, a large container, large bags for taking back samples and a bucket for collecting material. A small pair of tweezers will also come in handy. Fossils should be placed into containers. Any important finds, please hand to the geological society responsible for the trip and they will pass these on to the museum.

SAFETY AND DANGERS

Common sense when collecting at all locations should be taken. Digs should only be arrange with a geological society where safety can be maintained and monitored. Usually a member of the council will join any groups to ensure that proper shuttering is used.
