Fossils and fossil collecting in
Herne Bay, Kent
Location summary information for collecting fossils in Herne Bay, Kent

Twice a year, fossil hunters across the UK and Europe Flock to Herne Bay for the extreme low tides when the highly fossiliferious beds are exposed on the foreshore. Highly rich in shark and fish remains. Fossils can be found anytime.

Location Information

Herne Bay is highly productive, most of the fossils are found during the extreme low tidal conditions which occur twice a year, BUT fossils can generally be found during low tide washed up on the foreshore or within the shingle.

(Suitable for Children)

This location is ideal for children, the only advice is to keep an eye on children since if collecting during the extreme low, the tide comes in very quickly and islands of sand can mean, it is easy to become trapped and cut off. Please read safety notes.

Herne Bay is easy to find and easy to access. Parking is very close by and of course for food, drink and toilets, the town center is less than a mile away.

Foreshore

This is a foreshore a location, although Herne has cliffs, these cliffs only contain poorly preserved molluscs which are anyhow better preserved on the foreshore. This is a 'hands and knee's job'.

! IMPORTANT SAFETY NOTES !

Common sense when collecting at all locations should be taken and knowledge of tide times should always be noted. It is very easy to get cut off from the tide and the tide often reaches the base of the cliff. Stay alert of soft areas of clay, these can be very dangerous, it is possible to sink right down deep into the clay.

Be aware that the tide comes in quickly, sometimes circling around a particular low patch, stay alert to the sea's movement or you could get cut off.
