(View of Sidestrand) - 2002
|
LOCATION
Sidestrand can either be accessed from Sidestrand or from Overstrand. The best end at Sidestrand is from towards Overstrand, so it is recommended to visit Overstrand and walk from here to the first part of Sidestrand. See Overstrand for instructions on how to access. |

EQUIPMENT
All you need is a good eye, the cliffs are generally unfossiliferious, fossils can be either washed up from Overstrand and deposited at Sidestrand or washed out from the sea itself and deposited ashore. They are generally quite hard due to the sea mineralising them. They can usually be simply placed into bags, though it is best to always wrap fossils well to avoid them rubbing together. |
Keep an eye open for fossils in flint, these come from the glacial beds. Echinoid and Sponges can be found flint along with fossils deposited from Overstrand.

SAFETY & DANGERS
Common sense when collecting at all locations should be taken and knowledge of tide times should always be noted. The main issue one should be aware of is the tide especially with frequently landslips. It may be misleading that the sea defence will prevent the sea from reaching the cliff, during winter months this offers little protection and if you are walking from Overstrand, return in good time. You can often be cut off at Overstrand. |
