Caistor St Edmund
(Caistor St Edmund) - 2002

Caistor St Edmund has been a classic chalk pit of Norfolk for many years. The owner welcomes collectors, BUT ONLY IF YOU OBTAIN PERMISSION, also large parties or organised groups are preferred and often the only option. The Chalk at Caistor St Edmund is of the Late Campanian, the Beeston Chalk Echinoids, Belemnites, Sponges, Brachiopods and Bivalves can all be found. The pit also has glacial gravels at the top from the Pleistocene.

LOCATION

The Quarry is just on the outskirts of the village, its at the opposite end from the Roman Village which itself is clearly marked. Look out for a wooded area with a large concreate slope from the main road. Ensure you obtain permission to collect.

EQUIPMENT

A hammer and chisel is best to remove fossils from either the cliff face or to break apart larger boulders fallen below. However all you often need is a good eye for searching in the scree. Fossils can be quite fragile, especially after intense rainfall, ensure fossils are wrapped and placed into containers or small bags.

SAFETY & DANGERS

Common sense when collecting at all locations should be taken. Please ensure you follow the national safety guide when visiting quarries and pits, ensure you wear hard hats, suitable footwear and florescent jackets. Stay away from wet and water logged areas of the quarry, for you could end up being stuck in the soft chalk.
