Fossil Hunting in Cambrideshire

Cambridgeshire has some excellent Jurassic sites. The most famous area is around Peterborough. Here, the Oxford Clay has yielded several complete skeletons over he years. Reptile bones are very common, as is crinoids and ammonites. Most of the old quarries in Peterborough sadly, are now being swamped by the massive town expansion programme. There are however, two you can still visit.

Whitehaven

Most of the old clay pits have been swallowed up by the building of huge housing estates at the South of Peterborough. One area has been left as a nature area with public byways taking you around the rim of the pits, now filled with water. On the banks, the Oxford Clay is highly rich in fossils.

Whitehaven

Famous for its high number of reptile remains, this location has been the site of some complete skeletons in the past, but also yields fish remains, ammonites, belemnites, bivalves, brachiopods and crinoids. There is also a 'fossil hunting area' in the disused part of the pit which the general public can collect from.

Whitehaven

Grafham Water was formally a shallow valley, now turned into a large lake with water sports and a nature reserve. Today, fossils can be found plentiful along the banks of the lake and during summer months when the water level is at its lowest. Ammonites, Belemnites and much more.

Whitehaven

A small disused quarry, now with a nature trail through the middle of it, Heaps of Oolite Spoil can be found around the disused quarry which contains bivalves, brachiopods and oysters. If you are lucky, ammonites can also be found although there are not common.
